Humble Beginnings... The Mick Fetch Story Mick grew up in the Steel City of Newcastle. A love of music was evident from an early age, with his earliest influences being the music of Slim Dusty and Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. His musical talent simmered through his school years; there was some involvement with the school choir and Operetta’s, even some piano lessons but certainly nothing to speak of. It wasn’t until the age of 18 when Mick got his first guitar that the melting pot of musical influences finally started to emerge. The guitar was an instrument that Mick just couldn’t put down. With the encouragement of his largely non-musical family, he had bought a P.A. system and was doing gigs in local pubs and clubs within only 12 months!! A life of music in Sydney and the Central West of New South Wales followed, along with the opportunity to rub shoulders with many experienced musicians who taught Mick how to hone his craft; to take something away from the good and the bad gigs. Mick performed with “The Revs”, a 50’s and 60’s Rock and Roll dance band with a strong following throughout greater Sydney and Wollongong. A residency at the famous Rock ‘n’ Roll venue, Rockdale RSL, lasted for two years and allowed him to learn stagecraft and the teamwork required when working in an established band. The years that followed saw Mick as part of R & B 3 piece “Black Rose” and also a retro duo called “No Excuse”. Mick moved to the Central West town of Mudgee, where he was the founding member of country band “Left Hand Drive”. However all roads eventually led home for Mick and he returned to Newcastle to continue his by now flourishing solo career. He spent some time with legendary Newcastle cover band “Radio Ga Ga” while continuing to develop the acoustic style he is known for today. |
